THE GETAWAY Book Review

Small cabin in the middle of a snowy field, snow covered trees behind the cabin, light on in the one window of the cabin and a trail leading up to the cabin. Title in all caps and green above the cabin and the author name in all caps below the cabin.

The Getaway by Mina Hardy, eBook, 256 pages

Synopsis from GoodReads: Sometimes, it’s the secrets that save a marriage. For Claire Fitzgerald, her monthly getaway at a remote cabin is a time to relax, unwind, indulge. Two years with Elliott Reyes have been good to her…but all good things must come to an end, and she can only hope this final weekend together will finish their relationship on a high note. Elliott has other plans.

Having Claire once a month is not enough. He wants more of her. More from her. And, he’s got a plan to show her just how good it could all be, if only she will let him make her happy. Getting snowed in should be romantic, but tensions between the lovers rise. As a snowstorm traps them in the cabin and a menacing, unseen assailant launches an attack on Claire, both she and Elliott discover truths about each other they never suspected.

As it turns out, infidelity is not the worst thing that can be discovered about the ones you love. For Claire and Elliott, every truth comes tumbling out…and blood is spilled. Who will survive their weekend getaway? And who will die?

BOOK REVIEW: This book had more twists and turns than I ever expected. I haven't read this author before so I'm not sure if this is how all of her books go but it did not disappoint. I was about 45% of the way through the book when it felt like it was close to wrapping up and was wondering what the last half was going to be like and oh my...so intense! This is what I would call a lightly spicy suspenseful thriller.

Oh yeah...I just mentioned spice. There are a few scenes and I do mean only a few. This is my opinion and mine alone. They were short, descriptive but not too graphic, and hot! I have no idea how to rate spice levels because that's not my jam to read consistently. With it being the reason for her getaway I like that it isn't just the main focus!

Why am I giving this 5 stars? Because the last half of the book literally had me at the edge of my seat. Twists and turns, left, right and sideways! Just when I thought one thing, NOPE! I was constantly wrong and I loved that! It's been a long time since I've truly been blindsided by a story but y'all when I tell you that I couldn't have possibly seen how that was going to go, I'm not kidding! All the writing was amazing. The descriptions of the characters, the cabin location, even the rowdy teens that drove around the property on snowmobiles was wonderful and easy to see. This book is definitely in my top 5 for this year if not my top 3. Should I do a 2024 reading recap and rank my 5 star reads? I don't know yet!
