Synopsis from GoodReads: What if revenge ripples and echoes through time? You can’t choose your family or your destiny or your legacy. But once upon a time, a woman named Ava St. James had tried to build happiness upon the remains of her broken heart. For better or worse. Decades later, the Bakers are headed for a perfect family vacation. A full month at a house by the lake; the house passed down from a mysterious aunt no one ever talks about. Love and good intentions aside, what begins like a relaxing vacation turns into a nightmare as each of the Bakers’ nerves slowly but steadily begin to wear away at the edges. Is it their fraught family dynamics or is something more sinister at work? The house has welcomed them, but will it ever let them leave?

BOOK REVIEW: While a story with 5 different perspectives would normally drive me insane...this author was able to keep it cohesive. You got the same order throughout. Jeff (dad), Jenna (mom), JJ (son), Jessie (daughter), and Ava (aunt). I did find it funny that a lot of the Ava chapters are of her writing a memoire of sorts so it's all italic and then when it comes to regular font my eyes had a hard time adjusting back! Another reason I didn't go crazy with so many people talking is because it felt a little like a tv show. Take Gilmore Girls (because I love that show). You have a scene with Lorelai and Rory at home, then Rory at school, then Lorelai at the inn, then Friday night dinner. You're seeing what each person is doing and thinking without it feeling like too much. Does that make sense. Plus none of it is being told from the first person, not even Ava's memoire writing.

I felt this was a 4.5 star read for me simply because I wasn't expecting it to be such a slow burn. Like I was over the 30% mark and wondering when things were going to start turning and then they did. I also liked that I could knock out all 5 chapters in each part in one sitting so it was like reading a whole scene. I didn't even realize how many pages were in the book because I was so caught up. I definitely recommend this book and will be looking for more from this author!
